What kayaking on an Antarctic cruise is

Almost all expedition operators working in Antarctica offer kayaking as a separate paid program on top of the basic cruise fare. It's not a one-time excursion — it's a continuous activity for the whole trip: 4–7 outings on the water on a 10–12-day cruise instead of part of the zodiac landings.

The goal — to see Antarctica from water level. Without engine noise, in complete silence, surrounded by ice.

How much Antarctic kayaking costs

Program cost in the 2025–2026 season:

Operator Price per cruise Included
Quark Expeditions $1,095–1,395 4–6 outings, drysuit
Aurora Expeditions $995–1,295 4–7 outings, all gear
Polar Latitudes $895–1,195 4–6 outings, kayak guide
Antarctica21 $1,095–1,395 4–5 outings (short cruises)
Hurtigruten $800–1,100 3–5 outings

The price is not included in cruise cost. Signing up on board is no longer possible — there are 8–16 spots per cruise, filled 4–8 months before departure.

Participant requirements

This isn't "first time trying a kayak."

Mandatory:

  • Sea kayaking experience — most operators require at least 4–5 previous outings.
  • Age 18–65 — sometimes the upper limit is 70 with verified fitness.
  • Confident swimmer — even in a drysuit you need to not panic in cold water.
  • Medium-high fitness — paddling 1.5–2 hours straight.
  • Medical clearance — some operators request.

Desirable:

  • Experience kayaking in cold water (Scandinavia, Canada, Alaska, Tierra del Fuego).
  • Basic knowledge of self-rescue technique (re-entry).
  • Calm temperament.

What's in the gear kit

The operator provides everything needed.

Standard kit:

  • Drysuit — sealed suit with seals.
  • Two-person or single sea kayak — usually plastic Wilderness Systems or Necky.
  • Two-blade paddle — carbon or fiberglass.
  • Lifejacket (PFD) — mandatory over the suit.
  • Helmet — in case of impact with ice or capsize near rocks.
  • Sprayskirt — seals the cockpit.
  • Neoprene gloves and booties.
  • VHF radio with the guide.

What to bring yourself:

  • Thermal underwear (merino wool).
  • Mid-weight fleece.
  • Warm hat under helmet.
  • Waterproof camera or GoPro.

Regular photo gear doesn't work — spray, wind, sub-zero temperature. You need either a waterproof housing or an action camera.

How a kayak outing goes

The outing begins from the ship's side. Kayaks are lowered to the water by crane or from a zodiac.

Typical outing schedule:

  1. Captain's briefing — where we paddle, what conditions (15 minutes).
  2. Launch — sequentially, by pairs (20–30 minutes).
  3. Group paddling — 1.5–2 hours.
  4. Return on board, undressing, shower.

Group — 8–16 kayaks plus 2–3 kayak guides and a support zodiac.

What you'll see from a kayak

Icebergs up close. From a kayak you can see the structure of the ice — blue cracks, water-carved arches, century-old layers.

Crabeater and leopard seals on ice floes. Leopard seals sometimes swim up to the kayaks out of curiosity.

Penguins in water. When Gentoo or chinstrap penguins are feeding, they swim under kayaks in whole groups.

Whales. The main event of the season — humpbacks come up to the kayak or surface alongside. In February–March probability 60–70%.

Silence. This is what can't be conveyed. No engine. Just the sound of paddles in water and ice cracking.

When the program is cancelled

Kayaking is only possible in certain conditions:

  • Wind less than 30 km/h
  • Visibility at least 1 km
  • Air temperature above −10°C
  • No pack ice on the route.
  • Water temperature 0–2°C

Out of 5–6 planned outings, 3–5 will actually happen. One or two may cancel due to weather — this is normal.

Seasonality

December — best light, long day (18–20 hours).

January — peak season. Stable weather, lots of wildlife.

February–March — peak whales, seals more active.

The optimal month for kayaking is January.

Comparison: Antarctic kayaking vs Beagle Channel

On the Beagle Channel in Ushuaia we do intro kayaking — a half-day excursion suitable for everyone, no experience needed.

Parameter Beagle Channel Antarctica
Experience Not required 4–5 outings minimum
Duration 3 hours Whole cruise (10–12 days)
Price $120 per group $800–1,500 per person
Gear Wetsuit Drysuit
Difficulty Easy Medium-high

Recommendation: if you're planning Antarctica next season, do kayaking on the Beagle first before the cruise. Many operators count the Beagle Channel as experience confirmation.

Extreme option: camping with kayaks

For real enthusiasts there are camping with kayaks programs — overnight on the Antarctic Peninsula shore with kayaks. Extra fee $400–800 on top of the standard kayaking package.

Offered by: Quark, Aurora Expeditions, Oceanwide Expeditions.

Which operators are best for kayaking

Aurora Expeditions — pioneers of Antarctic kayaking. Best gear, experienced guides, up to 7 outings per cruise.

Quark Expeditions — serious program, dedicated kayak guides.

Polar Latitudes — small ships, small groups, personal format.

Antarctica21 — short cruises with flight over Drake, no rocking.

How to book kayaking

  1. Choose a cruise with suitable dates and operator.
  2. At booking add the "Kayaking program" option.
  3. Fill out the experience form.
  4. Get confirmation.
  5. Pay the supplement.

Booking timing — 6–12 months before the cruise.

The bottom line

Kayaking in Antarctica is a premium program on top of an expensive cruise. You pay $800–1,500 extra, you get 4–7 outings on the water in the most scenic places on the planet.

It's not for everyone — you need experience, fitness, readiness for cold. But if you want maximum from Antarctica and have the strength to paddle — the program is worth every dollar.
