Why you can't arrive on the day of departure

The ship leaves without you — that's not a metaphor. Flight delay, lost luggage, document issue — and you're stuck in Buenos Aires while your cruise sails. Most operators write clearly: arrive at least one day ahead.

There was a case: a family of four was flying via Buenos Aires with a connection. The flight from Europe was delayed 6 hours — the connecting flight left without them. The next flight to Ushuaia — only in the morning, and the ship was leaving at 16:00. They made it, but barely. Another couple missed the cruise entirely because of lost luggage and delays at Ezeiza. The moral: arrive 2 days ahead.

How many days in Ushuaia before the cruise

1 day — minimum buffer in case of flight delay. You'll manage to walk around the city and have a proper dinner.

2 days — optimum. One full day for excursions: national park or Beagle Channel. The second — reserve and rest.

3–4 days — if you want to see penguins, do a trek and feel the region. The most popular option among first-timers.

The most popular request: national park on day one, Beagle Channel on day two. If it's penguin season — instead of the channel we go to Martillo (full day). National park works best first — it's closer and shorter, and after a flight you don't want to drive far.

What to fit in 2 days

Day 1 — Tierra del Fuego National Park The southernmost point of the Pan-American Highway, subantarctic forest, the End of the World train. 5–6 hours, pickup from hotel.

Day 2 — Beagle Channel Les Éclaireurs lighthouse, sea lions, cormorants. 4 hours on the water — a gentle intro to what's coming in Antarctica.

Ideal preparation: national park on day one (a land introduction to subantarctic nature), Beagle Channel on day two (a sea introduction — sea lions, lighthouse, swell). After this you already feel the region and are ready for Antarctica.

Departure port: practical details

The Ushuaia port is on Maipú waterfront — in the city center, 10 minutes' walk from most hotels. Boarding starts 2–3 hours before departure.

We bring tourists to the terminal 3 hours before departure, help with luggage and see them off to check-in. Common forgetfulness: didn't buy water and snacks for the first evening (dinner on board may be late), didn't check the camera charge, didn't make a cloud copy of the passport.

Where to stay in Ushuaia

Ushuaia is small — almost any hotel will be 10–20 minutes' walk from the port. The main criterion for cruise passengers — flexible cancellation policy (flights sometimes get rescheduled).

We recommend the city center — within 10 minutes' walk from the port. Avoid hotels on the hill (Martial area) — beautiful, but far from the port and restaurants. Arakur is an excellent hotel, but isolated up top. For cruisers a compact center with restaurants and shops nearby works better.

Customs and documents before departure

Passport must be valid for at least 6 more months. Argentina entry card (Tarjeta de Migraciones) — filled out on arrival. Cruise operators send their own document checklist separately.
