Why hotel choice before Antarctica matters
Ushuaia is the last city before Antarctica, and most cruise ships depart right from here, from the Muelle Comercial (commercial pier) downtown. The flight to Ushuaia from Buenos Aires is about 3.5 hours, and if you're flying from Europe or North America the total trip with connections can stretch to 30–40 hours. Arriving on the day of departure is strongly discouraged: a flight delay (and they happen here regularly due to weather) means losing a cruise worth $8,000–15,000.
A hotel in Ushuaia serves three key functions before a cruise:
- Recovery from jet lag. The time difference from Europe is 4–5 hours, from the US East Coast 2 hours, from the West Coast 5 hours. At least 2 nights let you sleep and adjust.
- Gear check and last-minute shopping. There are outdoor gear shops in Ushuaia (Patagonia, Montagne) where you can pick up thermal layers, gloves, or waterproof pants. It's more convenient with a hotel base than dragging suitcases around the city.
- Luggage storage. On the cruise you'll take part of your stuff; the rest stays at the hotel or in a dedicated storage. Most decent hotels offer free luggage storage during the cruise (10–14 days).
Ushuaia neighborhoods: where it's best to stay
Centro — downtown
This is the historic center, the area around San Martín (the main shopping street) and parallel Maipú. Restaurants, shops, exchange offices, travel agencies, and most mid-range hotels are concentrated here. To the cruise port at Muelle Comercial — 5–15 minutes on foot, depending on the specific hotel.
Who it fits: people who want everything within walking distance, plan to eat at different restaurants, top up on gear, and walk the city without a taxi.
Downsides: evening noise (especially in high season), narrow streets, few parking spots.
Costanera — the waterfront
The coastal zone along the Beagle Channel, east and west of downtown. Hotels here have a view of the channel; the Muelle Turístico (tourist pier where the Beagle/penguin catamarans leave from) is nearby. To the commercial port — 10–20 minutes on foot or 5 minutes by taxi.
Who it fits: those who want water views from the window, calm, photogenic sunset walks. The Los Cauquenes hotel — one of the best in town — is here.
Downsides: to downtown shops and restaurants it's a 10–15 minute walk (or a ride).
Cerro Alarken and mountain slopes
Hills and slopes around the city: the Arakur area (on Cerro Alarken, 250 m above sea level), Las Hayas (on a slope), Hostería Patagonia Jarke (above downtown). Panoramic views of the Beagle Channel and the Andes, quiet, forest trails nearby.
Who it fits: those who value views, are ready to move around by taxi or a hotel shuttle, want to relax in a spa before the cruise.
Downsides: isolation from the city — hard without a car or shuttle. To the port — 15–25 minutes by taxi.
Hotels by price category
Prices are per double room per night in high season (November–March). In shoulder season most hotels discount 30–50%.
Luxury — $300–500 per night
Arakur Ushuaia Resort & Spa ($400–550). A 5-star resort on Cerro Alarken with a panoramic pool overlooking the Beagle Channel. Free airport and city shuttle, spa, two restaurants. Ideal for those flying in from Europe who want a full reset before the cruise.
Las Hayas Ushuaia Resort ($350–500). Ushuaia's oldest five-star hotel, on a mountain slope with a view of the bay. Large rooms, indoor pool, spa, free shuttle. Reputation matters here — polar researchers and cruise ship crews stay here.
Los Cauquenes Resort + Spa + Experiences ($350–480). A boutique hotel on the Beagle Channel shore with direct water access. Fireplace in the lobby, spa, seafood restaurant. Quieter than Arakur and Las Hayas, more intimate.
Mid — $150–250
Hotel Albatros ($180–240). A classic four-star hotel right on the Costanera, 5 minutes from downtown and the commercial port. Simple but comfortable rooms, good breakfast, channel views. One of the most popular cruise-passenger picks.
Cilene del Faro Suites & Spa ($170–230). A modern waterfront hotel, closer to the tourist port. Suites with a kitchenette, spa. Quiet, fits couples.
Hotel Tolkeyen Patagonia ($160–220). Located a bit out of the center (Bahía Golondrina area, 5 km from the port), but with a city shuttle. Large grounds, regional-cuisine restaurant. A good option if you want quiet and don't mind a taxi.
Boutique B&B — $80–150
Mil810 Hotel ($120–160). A designer boutique downtown, 5 minutes from the port. Contemporary interiors, excellent breakfast, friendly staff. One of the best value-for-money options.
Hostería Patagonia Jarke ($90–130). A family-run B&B above the center, 10 minutes on foot (but uphill). Cozy rooms, home-style breakfast, channel views. The hosts help arrange tours.
Hotel Lennox ($100–140). A modern hotel downtown on San Martín, convenient location, simple but clean rooms.
Budget — $40–80
Aparthotel Cumbres del Martial ($60–80). Apartments with a kitchen at the foot of the Martial glacier, 7 km from downtown. Works if you plan to cook a lot or come with a family for several days. A car or taxi is needed.
Antarctica Hostel ($35–55 for a dorm bed, $80 for a private room). The most popular hostel in Ushuaia, smack in the center. Kitchen, common area, free breakfast. Young travelers often stay here before a cruise.
Los Cormoranes Hostel ($30–50 per bed). A quiet hostel a bit above downtown, channel views, friendly atmosphere.
Proximity to the cruise port
Muelle Comercial (the commercial port) is downtown, at the end of Maipú. Most Antarctic cruises depart from here: ships of Quark Expeditions, Hurtigruten, Ponant, Aurora Expeditions, Oceanwide, G Adventures, and others.
Walk time to the port from various hotels:
- Hotel Albatros, Mil810, Lennox — 3–7 minutes
- Cilene del Faro, Los Cauquenes — 10–15 minutes
- Hostería Patagonia Jarke — 15 minutes (downhill)
- Arakur, Las Hayas — 10–15 minutes by taxi
- Tolkeyen — 10 minutes by taxi or shuttle
On boarding day, suitcases are usually checked into the port between 14:00 and 16:00. Most people take a taxi ($5–10) or walk if the hotel is downtown.
Airport shuttles
Ushuaia Malvinas Argentinas airport (USH) is 4 km from downtown. A taxi costs $10–15; the ride takes 10 minutes.
Free airport shuttles include:
- Arakur — yes, scheduled
- Las Hayas — yes, on request
- Los Cauquenes — yes, free
- Tolkeyen — yes
- Most mid-category hotels — no (or paid, $10–15)
Confirm at booking — it can save $20–30 on transfers.
Amenities that matter before a cruise
Luggage storage. Almost all 3-star-and-up hotels store suitcases for free during the cruise (10–14 days). Confirm when booking — this matters to almost every passenger.
Laundry. Before a cruise it's useful to wash clothes. Mid-category and higher hotels offer laundry service ($15–25 per load). Ushuaia also has several lavanderías downtown.
Good heating. Even in December–January, nighttime temps in Ushuaia are +5 to +10 °C. Older hotels sometimes underheat — read recent reviews.
Wi-Fi. Free at most hotels, but Ushuaia's internet is slow in general. For important calls, better use cafés with good Wi-Fi (Ramos Generales, Tante Sara).
Breakfast. Argentine breakfasts are usually light (medialunas, toast, coffee). If you want hearty — pick a buffet hotel (Arakur, Albatros, Tolkeyen).
Early check-in and late check-out
Cruise flights from Buenos Aires arrive in Ushuaia in the morning (08:00–11:00) or afternoon (14:00–16:00). Standard check-in is at 15:00.
What to do if you arrive in the morning:
- Most hotels let you leave bags in the lobby until check-in
- Luxury hotels often check you in early if a room is free (free of charge)
- You can ask for early check-in for an extra fee ($30–50)
Late check-out: on the day back from Antarctica the ship usually berths in the morning (07:00–09:00), and flights to Buenos Aires leave in the afternoon or evening. Many hotels accommodate and let you stay until 14:00–16:00 for free or half rate.
High and low season
High season: November–March (Antarctic summer, cruise season). Prices peak, hotels fill 3–6 months out.
Low season: April–October. No Antarctic cruises, but Ushuaia is interesting as a ski resort (June–September) or for shoulder-season trekking. Prices 30–50% lower.
Peak dates: late December – early January (Christmas cruises), mid-February. For those windows, book a minimum of 6 months out.
When to book
- December–February (peak): 4–6 months out
- November and March (shoulder): 2–3 months
- April–October: 2–4 weeks is enough
If you book without prepayment on Booking.com — read the cancellation terms carefully. Many Ushuaia hotels in high season only work with non-refundable rates.

Bottom line
Choosing a hotel in Ushuaia before Antarctica is about comfort on the 2–4 key days before the most important trip of your life. Downtown is logistically convenient; the slopes are prettier and quieter; the waterfront is the balance between them. By budget, options run from $40 to $500 a night, and each tier solves its own problem. The main thing — book ahead, choose a hotel with free luggage storage during the cruise, and make sure you have at least one night between arrival and ship boarding.
